Council of Europe: Ending coercion in mental health: the need for a human rights-based approach

In this speech I pointed out that a balance needed to be struck to take account of the situation where patients were at risk of harm to themselves or others. I also pointed out how around Europe I had seen situations where those with menatl health probelms were locked away to stop others harming them.  This spoke of the need for proper assessment, proper training and basic education.  I also said how delighted I was to see an emphasis in the UK on mental health in schools and the need to transfer records for those in prison.

Working for a better Europe

It is important that we have good relations with the wider Europe. That can be best achieved through the Council of Europe – a non-EU organisation set up after the Second World War to oversee democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Europe.

John's farewell message

As many people will know, I announced in April 2023 that I would stand down as your MP at the next General Election. My decision was taking on the basis of my age and that I did not want to be an MP into my 70s.
