John has expressed his concern at results determined by the algorithm where students have received a lower result than anticipated which has put in jeopardy their anticipated university place or career plan. Whilst there is an appeals process he is concerned at reports of university places already being refused on the basis of the results and has called for an immediate halt to UCAS Clearing to give time for appeals before it is too late.
John said: “I know very well the anticipation and anxiety of results day and can appreciate the enormity of the disappointment for students who have not got their predicted grades as a result to the method used this year. There is an appeals process but I am concerned at early reports of rejection of places before this has been allowed to progress and have called for a temporary halt to give time to investigate the effectiveness of the approach.”
Public examinations were cancelled this year in the light of COVID 19 and Ofqual, the independent regulator developed a process to give a calculated grade for each student per subject. This was designed to reflect performance as fairly as possible early concern has been expressed.
