Parliament Week is an annual series of events which aim to inspire interest in parliament, politics and democracy and encourage young people and the public to engage with the UK’s democratic system. It takes place in the first week of November. Organisations sign up to take part and resources are made available to support them. School groups, Girl Guides and Scouts are among the groups that have signed up in the constituency this year.
It is not usually possible for John to get to many of the group meetings personally as most take place when when Parliament is sitting and MPs need to be in Westminster. So instead John has made a short video to encourage the groups.
In thanking group leaders for signing up to take part John said: "Our democratic process is so important. Too many people have too little idea of what goes on, how decisions are made, and indeed how to engage with the process. It is often disappointing at how many people turn out to vote, especially at local elections. By making our young people aware of the workings of Parliament and encouraging them to take part in democratic process group leaders are proving an important part of their education."
