At the AGM of the Industry and Parliament Trust John was confirmed as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
John said: “I am delighted to take on this role at the IPT. It is an organization that provides a welcome exchange between business and parliament including of parliamentarians themselves. I myself have benefitted from the IPT in the opportunity it gave me to sit with judges right up to the Court of Appeal and to see the problems they face. I cannot speak more highly of the regular exchanges of views that takes place between peers, MPs and businesspeople. With so many coming in to Westminster without a business background it provides a valuable and much needed resource.”
The IPT is an independent charity that provides trusted engagement between Parliament and UK business. The IPT is supported both by cross-party representation of senior parliamentarians on its Board of Trustees, and through the patronage of its industry supporters. The IPT is non-party political and works with all parliamentarians and businesses of any sector or size.
The IPT provides a number of opportunities for parliamentarians and businesspeople. These include Fellowships whereby parliamentarians spend time working with senior management in businesses or in the law to experience the issues that they face first-hand. The IPT works with around 200 organisations based across the UK, ranging from FTSE 100 companies through to SMEs across a wide variety of sectors – from energy, manufacturing and aerospace to financial services, health and the media. To date, over 600 parliamentarians have benefited from a Fellowship exploring issues that affect business across the UK, including topics such as skills, sustainable supply chains and corporate social responsibility.
The IPT also equips parliamentarians from all parties with a greater understanding of commerce and industry through thoughtful discussion and enables businesses of all sizes and from all sectors to develop knowledge of parliamentary and legislative processes. Through this it enriches policy debates by deepening the dialogue between Parliament and industry.
